A reader replies:

"I understand what you are saying but I have always felt when it comes to the law changing, to go to church Sat AND Sun is giving in and not standing up for what we believe is right. I'll have to think more on it. About that time they will possibly say Sunday ONLY, so that will definitely give me an answer. :-) Mrs. White says not to rent our churches to Sunday people.. gives the wrong idea. Other SDA churches are going on Sunday sometimes, I personally do not agree. I am a Sabbath keeper, not a Sunday keeper. Just my opinion. :-)"

All opinions are valuable. Opinion must be carefully based on scripture and Spirit of Prophecy. Can you provide a reference for your statement that "Mrs. White says not to rent our churches to Sunday people"? I searched Ellen's published writings and found only 17 references that included the words rent and church. None made that statement.

This will require considerable prayer for wisdom and the leading of the Holy Spirit when the time comes. This definately should not be an "official" practice nor should it be a teaching. It may even be a moot point. We don't know the details of what the future holds.

We have meetings in our churches all the time on any given day of the week. Going to church on a Wednesday (or whatever) for prayer meeting every week doesn't make us a Wednesday keeper. Having a church meeting on Sunday doesn't make us a Sunday keeper. I would not support the idea of a weekly congregational worship meeting on a Sunday myself. Only if it were a legal requirement to attend a church on Sunday.

Like I say it may be a moot point depending on the wording of some future law. The concern is to avoid an inappropriate response to a weak law which would not bring honor to God. I left out the following quote which addresses this idea directly. There are many other quotes which shed a lot of light on this subject.

"Among the leading causes that had led to the separation of the true church from Rome was the hatred of the latter toward the Bible Sabbath. As foretold by prophecy, the papal power cast down the truth to the ground. The law of God was trampled in the dust, while the traditions and customs of men were exalted. The churches that were under the rule of the papacy were early compelled to honor the Sunday as a holy day. Amid the prevailing error and superstition, many, even of the true people of God, became so bewildered that while they observed the Sabbath, they refrained from labor also on the Sunday. But this did not satisfy the papal leaders. They demanded not only that Sunday be hallowed, but that the Sabbath be profaned; and they denounced in the strongest language those who dared to show it honor. It was only by fleeing from the power of Rome that any could obey God's law in peace." {GC 65.1}
