Home / Archives

Dear Brothers and Sisters in IAUA (ee-uh-oo-uh) our Father,

Greetings on this day of preparation for the weekly Sabbath. I pray this newsletter finds you in good health and happy in the service of the Lord. This is the 9th day of the 9th month of God's Sacred Calendar in the year 6012 Anno Mundi.

It is about five months until the Spring Sabbaths begin with the evening of the 15th day of the 1st month which is the first Unleavened Bread Sabbath (Saturday, April 11 on the 2009 Gregorian calendar, beginning sunset on Friday, April 10).

I receive a newsletter from a group of feast keepers in India called "Assemblies of Yahweh Ministries". There was an interesting article. I want to share part of it with you. I have researched the information but have not yet been able to confirm it. The original:

Vatican bans use of Name of “Yahweh” in Catholic Church services

On June 29, 2008, the top liturgical body of the Vatican sent a letter to Catholic bishops around the world with an explicit directive from Pope Benedict XVI, stating that the Name of “God” should never be pronounced as “Yahweh” in song or worship. The reason for such a directive is given as it is against Jewish and Christian tradition.

This is a very significant move on the part of the Vatican as the Catholics have used the spelling “Yahweh” in many of their officially published works. In the Telugu Catholic version of the Bible the Name of Elohim is spelled as “Yahweh” in many verses. The Pope is the spiritual leader for approximately one billion(1,000,000,000) people worldwide; up to this time Catholics have been using the Name of Yahweh in their songbooks, prayer books, and Bibles, but the Pope’s directive will attempt to stop this practice. Many millions of songbooks, prayer books and Bibles will have to be changed to come into harmony with this directive. That the most powerful leader in Christendom would make an official prohibition for all his people shows the importance of this issue to the Vatican.

Life experience (God's guidance) has illustrated to me some of the principles of overwhelming force. The first thing I observe is, while it is true God is all powerful, we see He deals with us in the most gentle and patient manner. We need to learn from this in our own actions. Time and time again I find myself reacting too strongly trying to force things. I see this often in others also.

I also observe that there needs to be a careful balance of force. Consider an illustration I learned from volunteer work building a church. We were asked to bring our own hammers to assist in the framing of the church walls. I brought my hammer and tried to help with the framing. I discovered that not all hammers are equal. My hammer was good for light work but was not ideal for the special task of framing.

A framing hammer is a little heavier and the handle is a little longer than the typical general-purpose hammer. The importance of being a little longer is that much of framing is done with the studs laying on the ground covered by the top plate. You don't want to get on your hands and knees to hammer and you don't want to bend over too much. The reason for this is related to why the hammer is a little heavier.

The project supervisor taught me that the nails used in framing are heavier and longer than most nails and they are covered with a special solid glue. The heat from friction as the nail goes into the wood melts the glue and then it immediately binds to the wood. That is why such nails must be driven in all the way with one precise powerful swing. If you use too little force and the nail stops an inch short the nail becomes glued in the wrong position. This makes it very hard to drive further. There is also a problem because the glue will not properly melt and bind the nail for that last short distance.

You also don't want to hammer the nail so hard you smash it deep into the wood resulting in splintering. Therefore, you need enough of an overwhelming force to overcome the friction to set the nail without overwhelming the wood. What is needed is a balance of strength and skill. You develop strength and skill swinging a hammer by practicing with other tasks that don't require the same precision that framing does.

Consider some social and religious applications of this illustration.

In witnessing, for example, we need to carefully balance the force needed to present truth sufficiently to overcome the friction of sin and error without destroying the receptiveness of the person we wish to understand and accept the truth.

I have seen it happen that a person learns some truth (like the Sabbath) and becomes so zealous that they take the truth like a hammer and start bashing people over the head with it. I am reminded of one of the many applications of the words of the Saviour.

Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

There are some amazing statements by Ellen White about the forceful spreading of truth.

The Paulson Collection of Ellen G. White Letters
Basle, Switzerland, February 18, 1887
Letter to Brethren Waggoner and A. T. Jones

Twice I have been shown that everything of a character to cause our brethren to be diverted from the very points now essential for this time, should be kept in the background. Christ did not reveal many things that were truth because it would create a difference of opinion and get up disputations. But young men, who have not passed through this experience we have had, would have as soon a brush as not. Nothing would suit them better than a sharp discussion. {PC 133.1}

If these things come into our Conference, I would refuse to attend one of them for I have had so much light upon this subject that I know that unconsecrated and unsanctified hearts would enjoy this kind of exercise. {PC 133.2}

Too late in the day, brethren; too late in the day. We are in the great day of atonement, a time when a man must be afflicting his soul; confessing his sins, humbling his heart before God and getting ready for the great conflict. {PC 133.3}

When these contentions come in before the people they will think one has the argument, and then that another directly opposed has the argument. Thus the poor people become confused, and the Conference will be a dead loss, worse than if they had had no Conference. {PC 133.4}

Testimonies for the Church Volume Three (1872-1875)
Chap. 23 - Effect of Discussions

I was shown that here is the danger of young ministers who engage in discussion. They turn their minds to the study of the word to gather the sharp things, and they become sarcastic and, in their efforts to meet an opponent, too frequently leave God out of the question. The excitement of debate lessens their interest in meetings where this special excitement does not exist. Those who engage in debates are not the most successful laborers and the best adapted to build up the cause. By some, discussion is coveted, and they prefer this kind of labor above any other. They do not study the Bible with humility of mind, that they may know how to attain the love of God; as Paul says: "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God." {3T 212.3}

Young preachers should avoid discussions, for they do not increase spirituality or humbleness of mind. In some cases it may be necessary to meet a proud boaster against the truth of God in open debate; but generally these discussions, either oral or written, result in more harm than good. After a discussion the greater responsibility rests upon the minister to keep up the interest. He should beware of the reaction which is liable to take place after a religious excitement, and not yield to discouragement himself. {3T 213.1}

Are you developing the skill to correctly balance necessary and excessive force in your relationships with other people?

I pray we may all continue to seek love, peace, and unity in truth preparing for the soon coming of IAUShUO (ee-uh-oo-shoo-oh) Messiah, the Son of God.
