Dear Brothers and Sisters in IAUA (ee-ah-oo-ah) our Father,

A reader responds to the last newsletter:

-----

Very good analysis of the "Do the safe thing" suggestion. The only safe thing, in a spiritual sense, is to do the right thing as the Bible teaches. Physically doing the right thing can be very unsafe. Just think about what happened to Jesus, Peter and Paul, and so many others. But it is not about protecting this body (Rev. 12:11).

Regarding the statutes there is an internal conflict in the issue of the statutes that I am interested to hear your response. You used the quote where Ellen White said "They were not shadowy types to pass away with the death of Christ." Yet there are examples of statutes that were clearly shadows of things to come - services of the sanctuary, sacrifices, and the feasts. Ellen White must not have been referring to these statutes.

You also say ...
> Why is it that a clear "Thus saith the Lord" is not enough
> to lead people to accept the truth?

We all know that people use a "Thus saith the Lord" to support all kinds of weird ideas that the Lord never said. This is why we have to study for ourselves. It is rather naive to think that just because we can find a Bible verse or an Ellen White quote that we think is "clear" and supports our position, a "Thus saith the Lord" is not enough when people don't instantly accept our ideas. "Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls." (Romans 4:4) The Holy Spirit uses the Word as a two edged sword but not a crow bar. Well meaning manipulation is still just manipulation. People must be free to accept or reject truth on the basis of their faith or lack of it.

Anyway, the bottom line is that what seems so clear to us may not be as clear to other people. You don't know what other people are thinking.

My reply:

-----

I apologize that I came across as preaching or using a crowbar in what I said in the newsletter. I am certainly not judging anyone. I speak of what I have studied and believe. It is so clear to me. I understand that others see things differently. You are correct, I do not know what another person thinks.

You are absolutely correct that we must study for ourselves. We must follow the truths we see and understand. I do not want anyone to do what I say. Do what the Bible says. I have tried to learn that I can share what I understand and believe but it is not my place to try to convince others of what I believe. This is a very hard thing to do.

You have asked for a response on a specific question. I will respond with my understanding of what the Bible says. There is an internal conflict in the issue of the statutes only if you make the sacrificial system an indivisible part of the statutes. Messiah was the sacrifice foreshadowed and therefore sacrifices ceased. This is stated by Daniel:

And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:27

After the perfect, final sacrifice the purpose of the temple on earth was abolished.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. John 4:21

The Messiah continues the function of the High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. Hebrews 4:14

The feasts on the other hand are still relevent. There were sacrifices on these feasts just as there were even more on the Sabbath and actually every day. Removing the sacrifices does not change the feasts.

May we all find peace and unity in the soon coming of IAUShUO (Ee-ah-oo-shoo-oh) Messiah, the Son of God.
