Preparing for the End of Time

The Lord is Coming!   Are you ready?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in IAUA (ee-ah-oo-ah) our Father,

Greetings on this day of preparation for the weekly Sabbath. I pray this newsletter finds you in good health and happy in the service of IAUA. This is the 7th day of the 5th month of God's Sacred Calendar in the estimated year 6016 Anno Mundi.

The fall holy day season begins with Trumpets Sabbath in 7 weeks and three days starting the evening of the 1st day of the 7th month (Monday, September 17th on the 2012, Gregorian Calendar, beginning sunset on Sunday, September 16th).

An amazing thing occurs in the Gregorian Calendar years of both 2011 and 2012. Those who follow the Millerite Calendar (Spring New Moon Rule) and the Jewish Calendar agree with the Spring Passover Rule dates my research, and others, has determined for the Gregorian Calendar dates of God's Sacred Calendar!

It has come to my attention the Karaite Calendar determination has placed The Fall Sabbaths a day later than others. This is probably because they use predicted visual sighting rules which can be very arbitrary.

George Evans • Frank, I have a problem with several documents from Norman Bradley. I have been reading the rebuttal to Ron du Preez. In it he quotes from an EGW manuscript I am familiar with, found in The 1888 Materials, p. 348. He has just told us that Uriah Smith had written some articles against celebrating the feast days. Bradley correctly tells us these were written at the beginning of 1888.

In her manuscript, which is a sermon given in the middle of 1889, 18 months after the articles Bradley mentions, she refers to something Smith has written that people have been asking her about. Here is the entire paragraph of Bradley's paper:

"When Ellen White was asked about that article in the Review, she said, 'Smith does not know what he is talking about: he sees trees as men walking... therefore he takes "those" that have been placed in a false setting and binds them in a bundle as though we were discarding the claims of the law, when it is no such thing..." 1888 Matt. Vol. 1 p. 348. If the 'those' means the six feasts that he was discarding, that she said was a part of God's law, then he was placing them in a false setting."

Now, I have seen the actual paper she is referring to here. Smith had just written it a week or two before, but Bradley wants her to be referring to the earlier papers about the feast days. So he introduces doubt about the antecedent of the pronoun "those" saying, "If the 'those' means the feast days..."

But if you read the manuscript in The 1888 Materials, it is very obvious what the antecedent is. It is just where you would normally look for an antecedent--in the previous sentence, which Bradley leaves out. "Everything depends upon our being obedient to God’s commandments." "Those" refer to the Ten Commandments that Smith thought Waggoner and Jones were throwing out. There isn't anything about feast days in the whole manuscript.

Because of this improper and deceptive use of EGW I would be cautious about using Norman Bradley as a resource.

Frank T. Clark • Norman is as human as anyone else but I suspect you are doing some twisting of words yourself. I notice you repeat the common error of sticking the word "Ten" in front of the word "commandments". I comment on this practice in my newsletter "Ten? Commandments".

www.iaua.name/Archives/2009-07-03.html

There are many things from the Law of Moses in addition to the "Ten Commandments" which the denomination accepts as commandments. Tithing, unclean meat, and many other things are not explicitly described in the "Ten Commandments". The denomination refuses to go any further in obedience than people like Smith and Butler did. Just one of many EGW quotes, which bears careful consideration.

Ellen G. White, "The Law of God", Review and Herald, May 6, 1875

In consequence of continual transgression, the moral law was repeated in awful grandeur from Sinai. Christ gave to Moses religious precepts which were to govern the everyday life. These statutes were explicitly given to guard the ten commandments. They were not shadowy types to pass away with the death of Christ. They were to be binding upon man in every age as long as time should last. These commands were enforced by the power of the moral law, and they clearly and definitely explained that law. {RH, May 6, 1875 par. 10} {1BC 1104.6} {ST April 15, 1875}

And of course God says:

4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
Malachi 4:4

Does "Remember" mean the same thing as "Nailed to the Cross"?

George Evans • Frank, you are right. I was trying to repeat EGW antecedent but I inadvertently changed God's commandments into Ten Commandments. It's odd how we do that if we're not careful.

On the other hand Bradley dropped the whole sentence so we couldn't even see "God's commandments." That's a little different.

Frank T. Clark • It is more than just odd that it is so easy to say "Ten Commandments". I believe Satan eagerly encourages any attempt to unwittingly limit God's guidance for us. If he can get people to ignore all the commandments, he is overjoyed. If people believe in the Ten Commandments, he struggles to get them to deny at least the fourth commandment. Even when they practice the fourth commandment, he tries to get them to stop there. Our adversary is very persistent and he has a lot of people content with what they know.

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
Revelation 3:17

I assume you know this is not only about worldly wealth but also spiritual riches.

George Evans • I didn't think there was anyone who thought it was about literal wealth. I have always taken it as unknown spiritual poverty in the face of apparent spiritual wealth.

Frank, we have to keep in mind that the 1888 message was not about adding law. Law was involved only to the extent of how much of it was not externally necessary after Christ comes into the heart. Smith and Butler saw only the ceremonial law as the unnecessary tutor, while Waggoner and Jones saw all law as the unnecessary tutor, when the student has graduated.

How often does a person go back to your driving instructor, once they have their license?

Frank T. Clark • I hesitated to respond but I decided I must...

Driving a car is no analogy to the consequences of our eternal salvation. When our Saviour is the driving instructor we keep going back because our "license" is not received until we are sealed. And we will spend eternity continuing to study.

From my previous comment:

"There are two interpretations of Righteousness by Faith which were a matter of concern. Those who fall into the error of faith releases us from obedience. This was used as the straw man against the message."

Waggoner and Jones never taught the law was unnecessary. They taught the opposite in fact or Ellen White would never have endorsed their message.

No part of God's Law is ever unnecessary! Animal sacrifices are no longer practiced but there is a great deal of the practice of God's Law which is dismissed along with the animal sacrifices.

George Evans • Frank, you aren't using the biblical tutor analogy correctly. The LAW is our tutor. Galatians 3:24, "Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ..." But once we come to Christ we don't need a tutor, verse 25, "But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor."

Regarding these verses, here is a quote from Waggoner's Signs of the Times article of September 2, 1886. I like to think this article was the shot heard round the world which precipitated the 1888 debate.

"...And this tutorship it exercises until the Seed comes to whom and through whom the promise was made, and then God’s people being all righteous, it ceases to drive them. They are 'in Christ,' and the law is in their hearts. In Christ they find everything. No NEED have they now to teach one another the way of truth, because the truth is in their hearts..."

We will always need the law in our hearts, just not externally as a tutor or teacher.

Frank T. Clark • Sorry, I wasn't using the Biblical tutor analogy at all. In that analogy, you are correct. The law is in our hearts and we obey because we love our Saviour and treasure every word of His guidance. We need no external pressure to obey.

We still have the problem of Satan continually trying to trip us. This is where we need His faith and the Holy Spirit to catch us and set us upright.

24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
Jude 1:24

Our knowledge and practice of the law is what purifies us and catches us by His faith and the Holy Spirit.

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Philippians 2:12

We are reminded:

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
II Timothy 2:15

The depth and breadth of God's guidance through His Law of love requires our careful and continual study.

We call ourselves commandment-keeping people, but we do not comprehend the exceeding breadth of the far-reaching principles of the law of God; we do not understand its sacred character. Many who claim to be teachers of the truth, have no real conception of what they are doing in teaching the law of God, because they do not have a living knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. {RH, June 3, 1890 par. 3}

If we do not study all the Law of Moses and follow in obedience we mock God who said:

4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
Malachi 4:4

If you do study and obey, then you have nothing to fear, nothing to argue, and nothing to excuse. You only need to continue in witness to your faith.

George Evans • Thank you for the good words, Frank. I wish we could all learn to quote verse 13 along with Philippians 2:12: "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is GOD who works in you both TO WILL and TO DO for His good pleasure."

Frank T. Clark • I agree completely. Those verses belong together. I will try to remember that in the future. It reminds me of the disappointment I feel when people quote John 3:16 and leave out verse 17.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent NOT his Son into the world to CONDEMN the world; but that the world through HIM might be SAVED.
John 3:16-17

I appreciate this very stimulating and challenging discussion George. Makes me think and study.

17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Proverbs 27:17

As Barnes says: The proverb expresses the gain of mutual counsel as found in clear, well-defined thoughts. Two minds, thus acting on each other, become more acute.

And Henry says: This intimates both the pleasure and the advantage of conversation. One man is nobody; nor will poring upon a book in a corner accomplish a man as the reading and studying of men will. Wise and profitable discourse sharpens men's wits; and those that have ever so much knowledge may by conference have something added to them.

And then Paul says:

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Hebrews 10:24

George Evans • Beautiful thoughts, Frank. I am happy to call you my friend.

Those who refuse to study and obey will continue their arguing and excuses.

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Hebrews 10:26

Do you practice righteousness by a faith which obeys all God's law?

I pray we may all continue to seek love, peace, and unity in truth preparing for the soon coming of IAUShUO (ee-ah-oo-shoo-oh) Messiah, the Son of God.
